Directed by award-winning cinematographer, Seo Mutarevic (Wild Side, Pernicious, Crave: The Fast Life), SHINER follows Happy McBride (Kevin Bernhardt), an aging MMA champ who decides to help out Matt (Seya Hug), a med school dropout who has dreams of becoming up a champ himself. Taking Matt under his wing, the up-and-coming boxer begins to battle his way to the top, until he falls in love with Happy’s daughter, Nikki (Shannon Staller), a genius multilingualist inspired to be a fighter herself. With high-rising tension building inside and outside of the ring, Matt faces the ultimate decision. Will he choose his mentor and winning career? Or will Matt leave behind the MMA world once and for all?
Awarded for ‘Best Screenplay’ at the 2018 Northeast Film Festival, SHINER was written and self-stars Kevin Bernhardt (currently filming Medieval in Prague alongside Michael Caine, The Shanghai Job with Orlando Bloom, Hellraiser III), who embodies Happy McBride. “Happy is mostly a jerk throughout the film and Kevin (Bernhardt) plays Happy perfectly. He provides depth to him and is charismatic enough that you can’t help but love him,” bylined the Irish Film Critic.
“Speaking of the script, I also liked the portrayal of the lower level side of MMA fighting that you don’t often get to see in mainstream media,” commented Ultimate Action Movies. Refreshing to see on the screen, the source added, “In these times where we are blinded by the circus level theatrics of big money fights, we often forget about the guys on the bottom who are basically fighting for peanuts because they have a passionate love for the sport. So lots of respect to Bernhardt and the filmmakers for focusing on the little guys. It is very appreciated.”
As a three-time winning intense and gripping MMA-actioner, SHINER showcases strong performances with talent from award-winning actress, Shannon Staller (Bravo 6556, Lonely Weekend) and Seya Hug (Lucky Girl, Walk of Fame), son of K-1 kickboxing legend Andy Hug. “Hug provides a good performance as a young and naive fighter from out of town. He shows a lot of potential for a young actor. Staller is also very natural in her role as Happy’s daughter. She plays off both Hug and Bernhardt nicely,” continued the Irish Film Critic.
